Arsenal win UEFA Women's Champions League
Arsenal stunned favourites and European heavyweights Barcelona at the Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon, Portugal, on May 24.
Substitutes Beth Mead and Stina Blackstenius combined for the solo goal in the game to secure Arsenal's second trophy in the competition since 2007.
Barcelona were looking to win their third title in a row but were undone by the tactical nous of Renee Slegers in the Arsenal dugout. England captain Leah Williamson had the best game of her life, blocking almost every shot that came her way.
How Arsenal beat Barcelona
It is a fairytale run as the Gunners sacked their former manager Jonas Eidevall mid-season after a spate of poor results. Slegers came in and steadied the ship and, against all odds, reached the final.
The semi-final was particularly interesting as Arsenal suffered a home defeat to record champions Lyon. The second leg in France was expected to be a routine win for Lyon, but Arsenal stunned them 4-1 to set up the meeting vs Barcelona.
Barcelona, meanwhile, thrashed Chelsea 8-2 across two legs to send out another statement of intent. Chelsea have been unplayable in England this season under Sonia Bompastor as they went the whole season unbeaten, including getting a double over Arsenal.
The Blues, however, couldn't match Barcelona's tempo as their hopes of winning the cup for the first time were dashed.
In the final, Arsenal created the better chances with Barcelona's two-time Ballon d'Or-winning duo, Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas, struggling to impact the game.

They also got an extra €20,000 for finishing top in their group ahead of Bayern Munich. Afterwards, they got an extra €160,000 for beating Real Madrid in the quarters before adding another €180,000 for seeing off Lyon in the semis.

"Congrats to these heroic women for making my club so proud after a disappointing season for the men’s team. But hope for the better next season."

"They managed to beat that unbeatable Barcelona team? Two Champions League trophies for them now. Arsenal women's team > Arsenal men's team."
Ariwa Triple C said,
"What Arsenal did this season is crazy. Stopping both Lyon and Barca on their way to the title is no mean feat. Just put it in context - Those 2 teams won the last 9 titles all to themselves. Hats off to Renee and the ladies for embracing her and her tactics."
Why some Liverpool players may not get medals
In an earlier report, some Liverpool players may miss out on EPL medals despite playing a role in the title-winning season.
Liverpool won the league with four games to spare at the end of April after thrashing Tottenham Hotspur 5-1.
The league will give them 40 medals on May 25, which they will distribute among the players and staff as they see fit.
