Can Fred Matiang'i win in 2027?

On Monday, June 2, Kenyans got a glimpse of Matiang'i's preparedness after a campaign truck branded in Jubilee Party colours was spotted.

The truck, which had Matiang'i's image, was parked outside the Jubilee Party headquarters, signalling his active preparations for the 2027 presidential race.

The vehicle, adorned with Jubilee's red and white colours, bore the slogan 'Mbele Pamoja', a phrase popular with the former ruling party.

Matiang'i recently announced plans for a nationwide tour to rally support for his presidential bid, with the Jubilee Party having officially endorsed his candidature.

The latest development attracted mixed reactions from Kenyans, with Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi suggesting that Matiang'i will be a force to reckon with in 2027.

"The war for Central Kenya in 2027 will be a three horse race. President William Ruto will fight for every vote. Former President Uhuru and his Project Dr. Fred Matiang'i will be a force to reckon with. Finally, depending his strategy, Rigathi Gachagua will be a formidable force," Ahmednasir said.

Is Gachagua uncomfortable with the Jubilee Party?

Meanwhile, the infighting between former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua’s allies and retired president Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party might derail Matiang'i's bid.

Gachagua and his allies have maintained that the newly launched Democracy for Citizens Party will be the sole political vehicle in the Mt. Kenya region, rejecting any divisions through the Jubilee Party.

Embakasi North MP James Gakuya confidently declared that Mt. Kenya has already chosen Gachagua as their regional leader.

Gakuya encouraged members of the Jubilee Party to join Gachagua’s new party in preparation for the 2027 General Election.

Will Gachagua support Matiang'i?

Gachagua has been positioning himself as the best candidate to fly the opposition flag in the 2027 General Election.

Just a week after launching his DCP party, the former second-in-command asked his counterparts in the opposition to support his presidential bid, saying he was the most suitable candidate with the zeal and political capital to send Ruto home.

The remarks came barely a month after he publicly cast doubt on Matiang'i's capacity to rally the Gusii behind him.

Speaking on Egesa FM, Gachagua said he was unsure if the people of Gusiiland would support Matiang'i's bid, arguing that some influential leaders, such as Kisii Governor Simba Arati and National Assembly Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro, were supporting Raila Odinga and President William Ruto, respectively.

The former Mathira lawmaker said that for Matiang'i to get the endorsement of other opposition leaders, he must demonstrate that his community is fully behind him.

A section of Kenyans has been vouching for a Matiang'i-Kalonzo ticket to take on Ruto in 2027.

Masolo Mabonga, HOD Current Affairs and Politics, updated this article with details on the possibility of Gachagua supporting Matiang'i in 2027.
