What is Makua Mutua's role in state house?

The president appointed Mutua to be his senior advisor on constitutional affairs.

Mutua's counsel, according to the president, will be consistent with the latter's Bottom Up Economic Agenda (BETA).

"I have appointed Professr Makau Mutua as the Senior Advisor of Constitutional Affairs in the Executive Office of the President. Prof Mutua brings a wealth of experience in legal, constitutional and human rights matters. Congratulations Mutua. I welcome you to join a dynamic team of public servants in the implementation of our Bottom Up Economic Transformation Agenda," Ruto posted on X.

How Makau Mutua reacted to his appointment

Accepting his new designation, Mutua promised to serve with diligence and honour.

He appreciated the significance of his role, noting that the constitution remains the most important among the president's items of leadership.

"I am grateful to His Excellency President William Ruto, for appointing me Senior Advisor on Constitutional Affairs in the Executive Office of the President. Our Constitution is the beating heart of the Republic. Mr President, I promise to serve you and our fellow citizens with diligence, honour, and distinction," he said.

Mutua, formerly a dean at the New York-based Buffalo School of Law in the United States of America (USA), is known to be a key ally of ODM leader Raila Odinga.

He has prominently featured in the campaign secretariats of Raila, both in the 2022 presidential election and this year's African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship; Raila lost in both elections.

Mutua joins the long list of Raila's loyalists getting plum posts in Ruto's administration.

Who else did Ruto appoint from Raila's circle?

Days ago, Ruto appointed Raila's nephew as his special advisor on economic empowerment.

Jaoko Oburu Odinga shared the news about his appointment via X.

He expressed gratitude to the president for giving him a chance to serve Kenyans.

While suggesting Raila might have influenced his appointment, Jaoko thanked the ODM party leader for showing confidence in him.

The appointment did not, however, sit well with a section of Kenyans who thronged the reply section with messages of disapproval.

They argued that plum posts were being dished out to the connected individuals while ordinary but qualified Kenyans continue to dust their credentials as joblessness bites.

Jaoko is the eldest child of Kisumu senator Oburu Odinga, Raila's elder brother.
