Generation Z (Gen Z) is rallying support, urging people to show up for the peaceful protests in different ways.

Some have even shared dark humour, saying they are ready to die in the fight for justice and a better country, raising concern among parents and the older generation.

As the nation remembers the fallen youth, Chrispine Odawa, the father of the late Rex Masai, shared a message of encouragement with Gen Z.

What did Rex Masai's father say?

He expressed pride in the younger generation for taking it upon themselves to demand justice and push for government reforms.

“My son was killed on June 20, last year. I want to tell Gen Z that this is their time to deliberate on the future of this country because they are doing what we, as parents, could not do,” he said.

Odawa added that parents had done their part by educating their children, but many young people still struggle to find jobs in their own country.

“I think it’s a good thing to fight for a better country and a brighter future. I urge them to turn up in large numbers. As a parent, I’m behind them, because we too are feeling the burden of life in this country,” he stated.

Rex’s father also urged fellow parents to come out and express their grievances to the government.

Who was Rex Masai?

Rex was the first person to be fatally shot, allegedly by police, during the 2024 protests.

His death turned the anti-Finance Bill demonstrations into a broader call for police accountability and justice.

The young man was reportedly shot at dusk along Tom Mboya Street while in the company of his friends during the protests in Nairobi’s Central Business District.

Did police shoot Rex Masai?

In related news, TUKO.co.ke reported that former Central Police Commander Doris Mugambi denied allegations that police used live ammunition during the June 2024 Gen Z protests in Nairobi.

Mugambi testified in court on June 19 during the hearing of Rex’s case, stating that police stations within the CBD reported no use of live bullets when the 29-year-old was fatally shot.

She further distanced herself from operational decisions, saying that only station commanders are responsible for overseeing junior officers.
