How much did William Ruto give Ojwang's dad?
A quick scan of his page shows the status of the @MwangiHub account and it stands suspended, which drew mixed reactions from netizens.
On June 16, Albert Ojwang's father, identified as Meshack Opiyo, said that President William Ruto called him to offer condolences for the death of his beloved son. He also offered him KSh 2 million to help with the burial arrangements.
The grieving dad was also given KSh 1 million by the Orange Democratic Movement's leader Raila Odinga, as part of his condolences.
The money and visits from politicians who initially kept mum when the news of Ojwang's death broke out did not go down well with many people, as Kenyans had stood with the family from the beginning.

Why did Billy slam Ojwang's dad?
Kenyans and activists even took to the streets and protested the death of the young man; they paralysed all operations of the day while agitating for Ojwang to get justice. A section of them, therefore, felt betrayed after Opiyo took the money from politicians.
Some people, however, did not agree with it and said that Opiyo was right in taking the cash because it would help them and Ruto had nothing to do with the death of the young blogger. Just like other Kenyans, he had a right to condole with Ojwang's dad.
Apart from just being angry over Ojwang's father accepting money and welcoming politicians to his home, Billy accused the middle-aged man of dining with oppressors and asked members of the public to greet him.
In that regard, he was asking Kenyans to send messages to the grieving man and tell him that he was wrong to take the money. His actions drew mixed reactions as well.
"Hello @elonmusk I'm writing on behalf of Mr Billy Mwangi to have his account reinstated. He's sorry for any rules that he might've violated," pleaded his friend Benard Kavuli.
"Billy is a Gen Z activist and the incoming senator for Embu county. He has a good history of online engagements. Thank you," he added.
Speaking exclusively to TUKO.co.ke, human rights advocate Mercy Kaburu warned that grieving families like that of Albert Ojwang often become vulnerable targets for political manipulation, especially after state-linked tragedies that provoke national outrage.
She explained that politicians tend to make sudden condolence visits or offer financial help not necessarily out of empathy, but as a way to douse public anger and reshape the narrative.
“We must understand that these gestures, while appearing kind on the surface, are often acts of political damage control. They are designed to pacify an outraged citizenry, not to deliver justice to the bereaved. Accepting such aid without questioning its motive risks legitimising impunity,” Kaburu told TUKO.co.ke.
Who is Billy Mwangi?
Billy Mwangi is a 24-year-old Kenyan college student and blogger from Embu, who gained national attention after being abducted in December 2024.
On 21 December 2024, while at a barbershop in Embu town, Billy was forcibly taken by four armed men in a double‑cab pickup.
He disappeared for 15 days.
His father spent the 15 days pleading with the state to release him, even apologising to President William Ruto.
"The four men mishandled the son and threw him in the car. I have no idea where he is; his phone went off immediately, and we haven’t reached him since. Please release him, I will discipline him myself," he pleaded as reported by Citizen TV.
His distraught family later confirmed he had been found alive and taken to the hospital on 6 January 2025.
Billy described being beaten, whipped, held in a solitary dark room, and tortured during his enforced disappearance.
The young blogger is alleged to have been abducted due to his satirical AI-generated posts he made on X (formerly Twitter) about President William Ruto.
Caleb Amisi warns Albert Ojwang’s father against exploitation.
In another story, MP Caleb Amisi warned Ojwang’s father to be careful in his dealings with politicians.
According to Amisi, politicians who are sending money as well as making promises to Opiyo are not genuine.
He shared that politicians only helped to calm the anger of Kenyans after the blogger's death in a cell at the Central Police Station.
Racheal Nyaguthie, HoD Human Interest, added details of Who is Billy Mwangi.
