The expectation at a funeral is usually a 6-foot-deep grave, narrow enough to fit a coffin, sometimes tiled, but rarely anything more.

However, a family in Hunedoara, Romania, left the internet in awe after sharing a livestream of their relative’s funeral and unusual grave setup.
The video captured a grave much wider than the usual 2.5 to 3 feet, with a layout resembling a bedroom.
Furnished grave stuns netizens
The coffin was placed on a permanent bed, with a bedside mat laid neatly beside it. A bedside lamp was beautifully arranged atop a matching drawer.
Next to it were two white, tiered shelves holding white flowers in brown vases, along with several green plants strategically positioned inside the grave.
What left tongues wagging was a woman inside the grave, carefully hanging the deceased man’s clothes on a black clothing rack as others watched.
She meticulously arranged the clothes taken from a suitcase and placed the man’s shoes neatly on the lower section of the rack.
Moreover, the family had placed several drinks, including water, on top of the grave, which was finished with black-and-white marble-style tiles.
After arranging the clothes, the grieving woman opened the casket, took one of the drinks, poured it onto a handkerchief, and gently squeezed it onto the deceased man’s lips.
She then knelt, kissed him, and wept as she said her final goodbyes. All of this unfolded as family and friends watched on, with some loudly weeping at the graveside.
Netizens marvel at bedroom-like grave
Social media users expressed sympathy, philosophical reflections, and calls for compassion, acknowledging the family’s pain and unique way of saying farewell.
Ramona Genoveva Bogdan:
"Those who comment harshly you can tell they haven't lost a loved one. Everyone expresses grief in their own way. Maybe this makes them feel better. It’s a grieving mother burying her child. Stop being so cruel."
Lilian Dinca:
"I understand the pain is deep... yes, even the funeral is different. But what are all those things for? What matters is his life with God, if that was God’s will. The rest is just tradition."
Ionela David Stefania:
"It would have been better to give all the clothes to the poor, that would have been meaningful. May God rest him in peace. Condolences to the family."
Emmanuel Adimanyi:
"A family in pain, unable to let go of a strong bond—a reflection of the desire to care, even to the very end. The woman’s cry gave me goosebumps."
Nyadendi Awino NyaRuoth:
"To dust we came with nothing, and to dust we shall return with nothing. Rest in peace."

Romanian funeral traditions
These kinds of extraordinary burials are not uncommon in the Eastern European region, where Romanian Orthodox customs guide how wakes and funeral rites are done.
According to Frazerconsultants.com, in many parts of Romania, funerals involve bedside vigils, the washing and dressing of the body by close family or clergy, and the use of candles, icons, and specific garments, including military uniforms or religious robes.
Like in many Kenyan communities, funeral wakes last a few days after death, to allow the family and friends to say their goodbyes to the deceased loved ones.
Myend.com reports that Romanian customs also include unique displays of grief and reverence. Families sometimes employ professional mourners who lament publicly when emotions run dry.

The Nigerian woman, identified as Grant, stood beside the grave, which was located within a larger cemetery.
It was cemented, neatly finished with a coat of white paint, and featured a banner at the top with her image, full name, and a tribute.
