Jane Wangeci Murage is deeply afraid for her young daughter, who is suffering from a serious underlying medical condition.
Murage said her thirdborn child, Nancy Wambui, may have to lose part of her body in order to save her life.
Beginning of Wambui's knee problem
Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Murage spoke emotionally about her Form Three daughter's condition, which may result in the loss of her leg.
“Her medical condition started late last year when she had just resumed school for her third term. About the third week, she began complaining of knee pain. It was the first time she had experienced discomfort in her knees. She was in great pain and kept crying.
I took her to a nearby chemist to get some painkillers. Her knees looked swollen, so we hoped the treatment would ease the pain or eliminate it entirely and stop the swelling,” she narrated.
The single mother was later referred to a hospital so her teenage daughter could undergo a scan and get a proper diagnosis.
Murage informed about daughter's knee cancer state
She was told to buy knee support, as her daughter could barely walk due to the pain and discomfort.
“The doctors knew what the issue was, but they did not want to tell me at first. A week later, I was told to book an appointment with a doctor at another hospital. I told the doctor we had been advised to wait for a month, but he disagreed. He told me to book another appointment with a private hospital and take my daughter for a scan.
We carried out an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan and were told to wait two weeks. After the fortnight, we returned, and they requested a biopsy, where they cut some tissue from my daughter's thigh for examination. That’s when I was told my daughter has knee cancer,” Murage, a mama mboga, said emotionally.
When did Murage's daughter begin chemo sessions?
Murage’s daughter began chemotherapy sessions in December, hoping to contain the spread of the cancer.
She did not return to school in January with her peers as she was still unwell and unable to walk.
“We finished the chemo sessions and returned to the hospital for updates. The news was devastating. Her leg needs to be amputated to prevent the cancer from spreading and causing more harm. She is stressed and in pain, just as I am. I don’t know what to do or where to start. I have a small grocery stall, and all the money I make goes toward her treatment. I’m at my breaking point,” she cried.
