What began as a peaceful show of solidarity ended with a legal storm, drawing one of the country’s most prominent lawyers into the centre of political controversy.

Lawyer Shadrack Wambui presented himself at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) offices based at Ongata Rongai Police Station on Monday, June 30.

He was accompanied by senior lawyers Danstan Omari and Cliff Ombeta, following a police summons linked to a past protest that reportedly turned chaotic.

According to Ombeta, Wambui had organised a peaceful demonstration in support of Kennedy Onyango, a colleague who had suffered during an earlier protest in 2024.

Did Shadrack Wambui organise violent protest?

He stressed that the protest had been genuine and law-abiding.

However, Ombeta told TUKO.co.ke that individuals, allegedly driven by fear of Wambui’s growing political influence, infiltrated the event.

These individuals reportedly staged a separate illegal protest that led to the destruction of property. After the violence, one of the culprits is said to have falsely implicated Wambui as the organiser in a report to the police.

“We are here to handle that issue. He has been summoned for something that everybody knows was politically motivated and politically arranged,” Ombeta said.

He made it clear that the legal team would not remain silent, and that they had anticipated such a move. They came prepared with a bond and anticipatory bail, a clear sign that Wambui had no intention of fleeing.

He added that Wambui had notified the authorities of his intention to appear at the police station at exactly 2.30pm, as required.

The legal team is now demanding clarity from the DCI, asking them to specify the exact charges, identify the complainant, and explain what offence, if any, had been committed.

Are Wambui's woes linked to 2027 elections?

Omari, speaking alongside Ombeta, declared that Wambui is the legal representative of 90 per cent of police officers across Kenya.

He said the accusations against him were part of a wider attempt to derail his political aspirations. Wambui intends to contest for the Rongai parliamentary seat in Kajiado North in 2027.

Omari pointed out that they had responded to the summons as law-abiding citizens, and he arrived at the station accompanied by a team of several advocates ready to defend Wambui.

He said the DCI had been misled and promised to present factual information to clear Wambui’s name. The team also intends to file a formal complaint against the area Member of Parliament and will escalate the matter to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

He firmly stated that they would not allow any political interference to tarnish Wambui’s image, especially when he holds a constitutional right to seek public office. Omari also revealed plans to take legal action against those allegedly hired to infiltrate and sabotage the original protest.

Omari called for political sanity in the region. He said the area’s residents deserve peace, competent leadership and space to do business without political intimidation.

He thanked the supporters who had turned out in solidarity with Wambui, reinforcing their commitment to stand firm until justice prevails.

Did lawyer Wambui rush to court over possible arrest?

In a related development covered by TUKO.co.ke, on Friday, June 27, Wambui filed an urgent application at the High Court seeking anticipatory bail.

Through his legal representative, he informed the court that he had received credible intelligence about a plot by state security agencies to detain and potentially harm him.

According to the court documents, the arrest was expected to take place on a Friday, a day often associated with the notorious “Kamata Kamata” tactic, which leaves suspects in custody over the weekend without access to legal recourse.

Wambui finally caught a break after the High Court in Nairobi granted him anticipatory bail, shielding him from the alleged arrest.
