The project was launched by President William Ruto on Thursday, May 29, in Ndhiwa Sub-county.
Others include 110 units of affordable houses worth KSh 246 million and a KSh 345 million modern fish market, both in Homa Bay Town sub-county and set to be launched by the president on Friday, May 30.
An inspection was carried out on Thursday, May 29, for both the affordable housing and the modern fish market to ensure they are up to standard and ready for launch.
The construction of this affordable housing project started in 2023, and it is now complete. People have already applied for all the units," said Thomas Ofwa, General Manager in the project management directorate.
He also stated that once the second phase of the project starts, more people with disabilities will be considered.
Homa Bay modern fish market
Regarding the modern fish market, now 99 per cent complete, the director of urban development, Lilian Kieni, said the project will accommodate approximately 400 traders who will have the opportunity to engage in value addition of fish from Lake Victoria.
"The market is almost complete, and we are happy to announce that we have different segments to see into different steps of value addition," Kieni noted.
The market will have four cold rooms to keep fish fresh, and lactating rooms for mothers who are traders, providing dignity as they carry out their daily activities.
