Elgeyo Marakwet: Father Allois Cheruiyot Bett’s calm and composed demeanour when addressing President William Ruto hinted at a relationship far closer than what meets the eye.

Following his death, an undated video has surfaced showing the late clergyman making a heartfelt appeal to the head of state, not just for his ministry, but for the future of the entire Elgeyo Marakwet community.

Father Cheruiyot, the resident priest at St. Matthias Mulumba Tot Parish, was fatally shot by unidentified attackers on Thursday, May 22, sparking widespread fear and grief throughout the area.

What plea did Allois Cheruiyot make to Ruto?

In the footage, Cheruiyot said clergy in the region have a mission to "disarm the heart and mind," aiming to change those with ill intentions.

However, he noted that priests face challenges due to limited mobility in the banditry-plagued and insecure area.

Cheruiyot appeared to ask the president for assistance in providing vehicles to help the clergy move with ease while carrying out their mission.

"They are requesting assistance to enable them to move freely. Even vehicles for gatherings like this would help bring people together to pray," he said.

Additionally, the late clergyman said churches in the region support the less fortunate but need the government's assistance to continue their work.

“These churches down here, as much as they preach peace, also assist those who are less fortunate. We have churches like AIC in Arror supporting orphans with education. The Baptist Church in Tot is doing the same. They are doing a great job supporting those in need," Cheruiyot said.

"We appreciate the government’s concern for the less fortunate. If we support the mission of these clergy in disarming the heart and mind, and also supporting those who are less fortunate, it will be of great support for the kingdom of God," he added.

Did William Ruto mourn Cheruiyot?

The passing of Cheruiyot brought grief to the nation, coming only days after the brutal killing of Father John Maina of Igwamiti Catholic Parish in Nyandarua.

The president joined Kenyans in mourning Cheruiyot’s death and pledged that the authorities would pursue those responsible and ensure they face justice.

"May God grant the family and friends strength to bear this painful death. We will hunt down his killers as we commit to restoring peace in the Kerio Valley," Ruto said.

Priests, nuns mourn death of Father Cheruiyot

In a separate incident, a video that showed priests and nuns mourning the death of Cheruiyot went viral, touching hearts nationwide.

The footage revealed the deep sorrow of fellow clergy members as they wept over the priest’s unexpected passing.

They gathered with residents of Tot village in Kerio Valley, Mokoro Location, Kakiptul Sub-location, Elgeyo Marakwet County, to pay tribute to the late clergyman.
