On Thursday, June 12, the anti-Albert Ojwang's murder demonstration turned violent as protesters vandalised newly installed dustbins.

Who vandalised dustbins in the CBD?

While inspecting the destruction, Mosiria condemned people who used the demonstration to vandalise public properties.

"Our constitution grants every citizen the right to peaceful picketing and demonstrations. However, the destruction and theft of public property such as our dustbins, which belong to the people of Nairobi, is a criminal offence.

"While everyone has the right to protest, it is unfortunate that some individuals are taking advantage of these demonstrations to vandalise and steal our newly installed dustbins, only to sell them as scrap. This not only undermines public order but also sabotages the progress we are making as a city," Mosiria.

Mosiria wondered how Kenyans would have the courage to blame Governor Johnson Sakaja's administration over the garbage menace in CBD when goons have destroyed the dustbins.

"Don't blame us that there are no dustbins in Nairobi CBD. You have seen what some goons have done. They have vandalised the dustbins; now you will have to wait for the next financial year. Don't complain on social media when you come across garbage in CBD," he added.

He said that as Kenyans exercise their constitutional right to demonstrate, they should not destroy properties meant to serve everyone.

"As you exercise your constitutional right to demonstrate, please do so peacefully and responsibly. Protect public property. If you witness anyone destroying or stealing, kindly intervene or report them to the authorities. Let’s not destroy what belongs to all of us. Let’s build Nairobi together because tomorrow belongs to all of us," he stated.

Were anti-Albert Ojwang's murder protests chaotic?

As reported earlier, protesters, enraged by Ojwang's death, poured into the city centre, clashing violently with police in scenes that left parts of the CBD in ruins.

The protest, which began shortly after midday, saw demonstrators, mainly young people, marching from the Ambassador area, hurling stones at police officers stationed near Harambee Avenue.

The chaos spilled onto Aga Khan Walk, where two vehicles were set ablaze, gutted by flames in full public view.

The heat from the fires charred the surrounding street, leaving visible damage and debris strewn across the tarmac.

At some point, the anti-riot police officers were forced to use teargas to disperse the demonstrators, who were demanding DIG Eliud Lagat's resignation over Ojwang's death.
