How did the Keroka matatu accident occur?
According to the police report, three people died following the accident that involved a Cruiser PSV matatu on Sunday, June 8.
Initial reports show that the PSV matatu en route to Nairobi collided with two motorcycles near Keroka Sub-County Hospital.
Eyewitnesses said the accident occurred after the driver lost control, veered off the road, and landed in a ditch due to brake failure.
The fatal crash occurred around 11am along a dangerous, steep slope between Ichuni and Keroka town.
The accident caused a heavy traffic jam as bystanders tried to pull out the passengers trapped in the matatu.
According to eyewitnesses, the Nairobi-bound matatu had picked up several passengers along the Kilgoris-Nyangusu-Gesusu-Masimba route before it lost control under unclear circumstances moments later.
Images of the scene, obtained by TUKO.co.ke, showed the vehicle was in a horrific state, severely mangled as it lay in the ditch.
Notably, one of the matatu's tyres was missing, with witnesses describing how the wheel malfunctioned, causing the matatu to swerve erratically for a few seconds before colliding with two motorcycles.
The injured have been rushed to Keroka Sub-County Hospital for urgent medical attention as police commenced investigations.

How the Molo accident left 12 passengers dead
The accident occurred just weeks after 12 people tragically lost their lives in a devastating crash on the Njoro-Molo Road in Nakuru County.
The incident took place just before 6pm on Thursday, May 8, at Chebonde/Arimi, when a Nakuru K Service matatu collided head-on with a lorry.
County Police Commander Michael Mwaura confirmed that all 12 victims from the matatu, including six men and six women, died instantly at the scene.
Their bodies were taken to the Molo Sub County Mortuary, while eight survivors were rushed to various health facilities for treatment.
Elburgon MCA Njuguna Mwaura explained that the lorry, travelling towards Molo, collided with the Nissan vehicle, which appeared to have suffered a tyre burst, causing it to lose control before the crash.
John Mureithi, a passenger in the lorry, recounted that they were heading to Molo when the Nissan rolled and struck their vehicle.
He mentioned that good Samaritans assisted at the scene; while he only sustained minor injuries, the driver of the lorry was taken to the hospital with serious wounds.
Police urged motorists to exercise caution while on busy highways to avoid causing accidents.
