Which Kenyans were deported by Tanzanian authorities?
Mutunga and Karua were among high-profile Kenyans who were detained and denied entry into Tanzania on Sunday, May 18.
Mutunga, together with two Kenyan activists, Hanifa Adan and Hussein Khalid, were detained at the Julius Nyerere Airport, Dar es Salaam.
Karua, alongside Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Council member Gloria Kimani and member of the Pan-African Progressive Leaders Solidarity Network Lynn Ngugi, were also detained at the Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam.
What CHADEMA said about Karua's deportation
Meanwhile, Tanzania's main opposition party, CHADEMA, strongly condemned the deportation of six Kenyans.
In a statement issued on Sunday, May 18, CHADEMA criticised President Suluhu's administration for detaining and mistreating Karua, leader of the People’s Liberation Party.
CHADEMA described it as shameful that Suluhu’s administration denied Karua entry, despite her presence being solely to attend the court hearing of CHADEMA leader Tundu Antiphas Lissu, who faces politically motivated sedition and treason charges.
The party has called on the Tanzanian Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration Services to provide an immediate and public explanation for the legal grounds behind detaining and refusing entry to Karua and her colleagues.
CHADEMA also demanded an apology from Suluhu’s administration to Karua and the two other Kenyan lawyers for their mistreatment.
