The influencer was allegedly arrested on Saturday, June 7, in Migori town and driven to Nairobi and allegedly booked at the Central Police Station.
Ojwang, who was a teacher in Voi, had travelled to Migori to visit family when he was picked up by police officers.
According to a statement to the press by the National Police Service (NPS), Ojwang injured himself while in the police cell alone, resulting in his death.
He was found with head injuries believed to be self-inflicted and was immediately taken to the hospital and pronounced dead on a rival.
"NPS confirms that Albert Omondi Ojwang was lawfully arrested by DCI detectives for false publication and placed in custody. While in custody, the suspect sustained head injuries after hitting his head against the cell wall. Police officers on duty promptly noticed the injuries and rushed him to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival," read the statement in part.
In line with statutory requirements, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation into the incident.
Following his death, many Kenyans are asking difficult questions about Ojwang's death and calling for justice.

Nakuru family seeks answers as kin dies in police custody
Previously, a family in Nakuru demanded answers after the sudden death of their 28-year-old relative, Denis Kiprotich, while in police custody.
The young man died while in remand at Nakuru GK Prison after being unable to raise bail money.
Kiprotich had been arrested after a minor disagreement with a passenger at a bus terminus, where he had asked the man to give up his seat for a woman with a baby.
The passenger, feeling insulted, later returned with plainclothes officers who arrested Kiprotich on March 21 and took him to Nakuru Central Police Station.
